About us - Environmental & Social Action

At The Highfield Company, we have made a commitment to take accountability for our impact on the world and we will work hard in all we do to look after our world and give something back.

In regards to our responsibility towards the environment, we utilise only 100% renewable energy for all of our power needs, we recycle a high percentage of what we dispose of and we purchase products only from either sustainable or recycled sources where we can. We believe this world is the only world we have and we actively look at ways to try to minimise our impact. We accept that we work in construction and engineering, which has a high impact on the planet, but we look to work with all of our clients in the most environmentally positive manner possible.

Our desire to be active socially also shows in how we live our lives. Every member of our team has made the commitment to regularly donate blood or platelets. Between the individuals in our team, we all are involved in different ways. Some of our team sponsor children in South America and Africa, others are involved with St Johns Ambulance, others work with Homeless people in Southampton - this is just a few of the activities we partake in. Also, one day a quarter, the entire company spends a day working for Communicare, a Southampton social charity that supports elderly, disabled, vulnerable and housebound individuals. Typically, we will spend the day doing a garden clearance or painting & decorating.

As a company, we also are passionate about supporting people who need help. We have made the commitment to donate 10% of our annual corporate dividends / profits towards a number of Southampton and International charities. We are pleased to confirm that our 2010/2011 commitments are as follows:

• The Dreamland Medical Centre, a hospital in rural Western Kenya. You can read more about both the hospital and the two sponsored staff by clicking here
• Water & Sanitation Provision in Southern India, working in partnership with Just A Drop. You can read more about the water project by clicking here
• A donation via Tearfund towards the East Africa famine crisis
• A donation to Southampton Opportunity Group, a local organisation that caters to children with special needs.
• A donation to Society of St James, a Southampton organisation that caters to homeless people
• A donation to The Gate, a Southampton organisation that caters to vulnerable women
• A donation to Highfield Church in Southampton towards community work.

We will be investigating where we may be able to assist for our 2011/2012 commitments later this year.
